THE SENSE OF MUSIC
The sense of music in this digital world.
Sense
Lately I was caught by the word 'sense' . After some googling I discovered that the word has several meanings and is used in different kind of ways. I found 'nonsense' and 'no-nonsense'. I found 'sensual' and 'come to your senses' and 'does it make sense?' Actually the word 'SENSE' is more powerful than you probably might think.
Why?
Essentially I think almost everything that we do and what we are in our world and society is based on what our senses register. Don't you think so? Just consider why we need a house, money, food, warmth and security. We do because we have to satisfy the need of our senses. If we don't we will sooner or later be confronted with those nasty unpleasant feelings of hunger, cold and fear.
To be loved is essential for us. To have friends is important. To be accepted is extremely necessary for all of us. All those feelings like love, friendship and acceptance are perhaps not yet physically measurable but they are real and our senses are responsible for those feelings. So, are our senses in control? Are we dictated by satisfaction? Is it not true that in the end everything is a matter of survival because we are driven by our senses, our fear to die or our need to live?
" It is essential for all of us to be loved..."
When I was young I often heard hard working people mention the fact that creative people, painters, musicians were of no use. As they don't make things for you to eat or to wear. It goes without saying that from their point of view they were right. But most of the people who think that we can live without art, music and culture are not aware of the simple fact that almost everything what they buy or use is designed or created by creative people.
Of course we don't need a song to exist, we don't need to see a Christmas movie to become happy. We don't need a painting to experience beauty. But music and art can be very important to us because they open the registers to our senses. They have the power to enter the closed and forbidden places in the human heart and soul where no therapist or doctor can ever come.
" Music and art can be very important to us because they open the registers of our senses..."
That is the reason why music, art, dance and poetry make sense. Because they help us to discover our true emotions in what we think or feel. They can be a great help to bring us to the point where we will burst into tears.
The good news is that they will never feel as an obligation. They will wait until we allow them in our lives. They will wait until we let ourselves be moved by them. They will never do us any harm. Instead of therapies and other methods that aim to reach the human heart, they will never force themselves upon you. Music and art are your best friends and they will always be there for you.
I started with the word sense. A word that is so much more than just a word. It is the tip of the iceberg. I speak for myself when I say that I often act and behave like that iceberg. Hiding most of my true senses and emotions in daily life. But when we jump in the ocean of music and art and look under the surface we will discover a huge amount of senses, emotions and all what is unseen. But it's there. It has been there all the time!
" ....vibrations of air, capable to make us whole... "
From all the art music is something special. It is immaterial, not touchable, never the same, always unique. And it's only caused by vibrations of air. Picked up by our ears, nerves, brains and affecting our heart and soul. That makes music even more special. A wonderful phenomena that is capable to show us the undiscovered part of us. To make us whole.
Yes, Music make sense.
